4 dead, 3 injured as truck falls into river

  • Mr Robert Woniala, a resident, said at the time the accident happened, the driver was over speeding.

Four people have been confirmed dead and 3 others injured after a Fuso truck in which they were travelling in, overturned and toppled into a river in Bwikhonge Sub-County, Bulambuli District.

The accident is said to have happened after the driver of the truck registration number UAR 087C, which was carrying merchandise and passengers heading to Nakapiripirit District, lost control at Cheputuyi River Bridge.

Police have identified the deceased as; Daniel Lotomei, Lodowa, Balokole and Lokoti, all from Loroo Sub-County in Amudat District.

The injured were; Abasi Wandwasi, Rogers Bubulo and another yet to be confirmed. They are currently admitted at Muyembe health centre IV.

The Elgon region police Spokesperson, Mr Suwed Manshur, confirmed the accident and said police officers have already been dispatched to the scene.

“Four people have died and the other three sustained serious injuries during the accident, which occurred at night. We already sent out team of police officers to the scene to ascertain the situation,” he said.

Mr Manshur said police is hunting for the driver who is currently on the run.
“We are hunting for the driver who took off after the accident to help with the investigations,” he said, adding that the accident could have been caused due to slipperiness of the road after a heavy down pour.

Mr Robert Woniala, a resident, said at the time the accident happened, the driver was over speeding.
“The driver was over speeding yet it had rained,” he said.

He also criticised the Uganda National Road Authority (UNRA) for failure to repair the bridge which is in sorry state.
