KAMPALA. More than half of the students who sat last year’s Makerere University Mature Age Entry examinations have failed.

Out of the 746 students who did the tests in December on either the science or arts programme, 309 students (41 per cent) passed the exams while 437(59 per cent) failed.
The science students performed better than their arts counterparts.

Results
According to the results released yesterday, out of 510 who sat for the sciences programmes, only 238 passed the exams.
Of 236 students who sat for the arts programmes, only 71 passed.

According to the university’s academic registrar, Mr Alfred Masikye, those students who scored 50 per cent and more qualify to join the university in various courses.

“The candidates who scored a final mark of 50 per cent and above passed the aptitude exams and will have their programmes,” a notice signed by Mr Masikye stated.

They are expected to report with the rest of the students when the 2018/2019 academic year starts in August.

Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the university vice chancellor, referred this newspaper to Mr Masikye to explain why they got many failures.
However, the latter declined to comment.
