MBARARA. About 655 families in Ndeija Sub-county Rwampara County, Mbarara District, have appealed to government for relief aid following destruction of their crops by a hailstorm.

The hailstorm affected the villages of Nyindo, Kyetsika I and II, Ndeija I and II and Ibaare in Ndaija parish Ndeija Sub-county in Rwampara on Friday at around 5pm.

The Ndaija Sub-county chief, Mr Nelson Mugumya, said houses, gardens of bananas, cassava, coffee and tomatoes were destroyed and pigs killed.

The residents are appealing to government for food relief and seeds for planting.
The Mbarara Resident District Commissioner, Capt Martha Asiimwe, told the affected residents that her office will work hand-in-hand with that of the Chief Administrative Officer to link up with the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and lobby for aid.

Mbarara CAO Felix Cuthbert Esoku advised the residents to plant more trees to act as wind breakers and for environmental conservation. He added that they have made assessment and they will submit it to the OPM that will decide on how to provide assistance to the affected families.
