MBARARA- Church of Uganda Archbishop Stanley Ntagali has warned government and proponents of the Abortion Bill that the practice is unGodly and is likely to cause doom to the country.

Archbishop Ntagali, who was preaching at All Saints Church in Mbarara on Tuesday ahead of celebrations to mark 80 years of East African Revival in Ankole at St James Cathedral on Sunday, said they are hearing rumours that there is a section of people pushing for legalising of abortion.

He said the church condemns abortion as ungodly and will not accept it.

“We are hearing a rumour about legalising abortion in this country. As a church, we strongly condemn this, it’s murder, killing, nobody has a right to take way life, it’s ungodly,” said Archbishop Ntagali.

He said the world is becoming crazy, dangerous and that the many problems the world is facing like terrorism, wars, political differences, hatred and calamities is because people have had no time to stop and think about their relationship with God.

He pledged Church’s commitment to fighting ungodly practices and showing guidance as well as counselling people.

Reproductive health activists, some lawmakers and other proponents of abortion urge that legalising it will help reduce maternal deaths.

According to Uganda Demographic and Health Survey done in 2011, at least 1,500 women die from unsafe abortions annually.

Archbishop Ntagali also condemned greed among Ugandans. “People are becoming too greedy, desiring to have more than you can work for. This has bred corruption and misuse of public resources. Roads are becoming impassable, women dying in hospital during delivery because they are no drugs, schools are dilapidated but some people are building mansions,” Archbishop Ntagali said.

He said many people are worshipping money and have ended up chasing it through wrong means.

He said this, however, leaves them frustrated.
The Ministry of Health is consulting on the Abortion Bill that it says will go a long way in stopping unsafe abortions in the country that have resulted into deaths.
