Police have recovered three guns with five magazines and six bullets from Rwigho market, commonly known as Kajoly in Bwesumbu Sub-county, Kasese District.
The guns were dropped at the door of Bwesumbu Sub-County Speaker, Mr Mukeka Misaki at the weekend, following a week of community policing.
During the community policing meetings, security officials appealed to the residents to voluntarily surrender the firearms. The three guns were part of 19 others grabbed from security officers during the clashes between Rwenzori royal guards and government security personnel in November last year.
While retrieving the guns, Mr Sam Ssubi, the Hima District Police Commander hailed residents for responding to their call to surrender the fire arms. Mr James Mwesigye, the Kasese Resident District Commissioner, thanked residents for being cooperative and listening to their leaders who are preaching peace.
Mr Samuel Eccega, the Rwenzori Regional Police Commander called residents still on the run to return and surrender, saying they will be pardoned. Kasese District vice chairperson Elly Magwara apologised to the RDC for the November clashes.
He blamed the clashes on ignorance among leaders and high illiteracy levels in the community. Mr Magwara appealed to government to set up a technical school in the area to allow the youths get skills.
