Residents loot relief items at accident scene

Hoima- A truck that was transporting food to Kyangwali Refugee Settlement camp in Hoima District crashed on Wednesday at Kyenjojo, in Kabwooya Sub-county.

According to police, the truck, Reg. No. UAT 166 M was transporting flour and cooking oil from Kampala to the refugee camp.

"The driver lost control of the truck which overturned," Mr Josephat Muhindo, the Sebagoro Criminal Investigations Officer said.

He blamed the accident on speeding.

The truck blocked the road and paralysed traffic on the busy Hoima -Kaiso -Tonya road that leads to some oil wells on the shores of Lake Albert.

The driver sustained a deep wound on his stomach while his assistant escaped with broken legs, according to Mr Ezama Chirino, the Kyenjojo village chairperson, who rushed to the accident scene.

"This is a dark spot. We have lost over 30 people here in the last two years," Mr Chirino said.

Dozens of residents looted most of the items that were being transported on the truck.

Witnesses say, policemen from Kaseeta Police Post fired live bullets to disperse residents who were looting the items.
