Merchandise lost as fire burns Jinja Market
JINJA- Traders in Jinja are inconsolable following a fire that gutted Madhvani Market on Tuesday.
The fire which started at about 2:00am, reduced half of the market to ashes.
According to the Jinja Central Division Councillor, Mr Zein Abdullah, who rushed to the market, some traders did not switch off their electrical appliances on Monday after a power outage in Jinja town that lasted several hours.
His assement, however, is yet to be confirmed by police.
Ms Jennifer Nabirye, the security officer at the market said she has been advising vendors to switch off their power and electrical appliances to avoid such problems, but in vain.
She added that the Fire Bridge from Jinja Central Police Station rushed to the scene in time but failed to extinguish the fire because they did not have enough water.
“The fire was eventually put out by a Fire Brigade from Kakira which saved a section of the market on Gokhale Road,” Ms Nabirye said.
Traders wailed as their retail shops, restaurants, and salons among other businesses perished.
Mr Ibrahim Kyambadde, a retail shop owner said he managed to salvage some of his merchandise although he lost crates of sodas to thieves.
