Zimmwe is dead

Andrew Kasagga (RIP)

Kampala business tycoon and leading contractor Andrew Kasagga popularly known as Zzimwe has died.

Zzimwe, 63, passed away yesterday morning, at his home in Muyenga. He succumbed to pancreatic cancer, which he had been battling for several months, family sources said. It was a battle that had taken him to hospitals in South
Africa and India. “I think he passed away at around 8am. They had rushed him here but the doctor (Lorreine Reyes) who saw him on arrival concluded he had already died,” Dr Andrew Ssekitoleeko, Director of clinical services at International Hospital – Kampala told Daily Monitor.

“What I can say is that he has had a long illness. As for the details, I can’t divulge anything until the family gives authority,” Dr Ssekitoleeko added. But Paul Kasagga, who has been managing Zzimwe Construction Company said his father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May last year in South Africa.

“The doctors there had given him six months but he has outlived that,” Mr Kasagga said, adding that the disease must have been diagnosed while in late stages.
Mr Kasagga who expressed shock at the sudden death said they had the previous evening had a company meeting at which Zzimwe was stable. “We even watched soccer together,” Mr Kasagga said.

By 10am yesterday, friends from the Kwagalana group, in which the deceased has been a member, had gathered to make burial arrangements.
There will be a requiem mass at Rubaga Cathedral today at noon before the body is taken to the deceased’s home in Muyenga for a night vigil. It will tomorrow be taken to his village home in Seeta, Mukono and burial will take place on Thursday.
