Budaka- Seven officials in Budaka District have been arrested to help with investigations after a grenade was found in the town council offices last week.

Unknown assailants reportedly attempted to kill two town council officers by planting a hand-grenade near their offices.

There was a stampede at the offices when anti–terrorism police squad stormed the scene and recovered the explosive, a metre away from the office of the town clerk.

Security sources told the Daily Monitor that the officers could be taken to the Special Investigations Unit in Kireka, Kampala for further interrogation.

Mr Michael Odongo, the Malaba regional police spokesperson, who confirmed the development, said the explosive was found at about 1pm tied around a standby generator after the two officers, the town clerk, Mr Martin Mulekwa, and the municipality mayor, Mr Augustine Mubale, had gone for lunch.

“Preliminary police investigations have ruled out the possibility of external factors but rotate among employees because of the current internal wrangles . The motive of the assailants remains unclear as investigations are underway to establish the perpetrators,” Mr Odongo said.

“Maybe the assailants’ target was intentionally to hurt and kill the two officers, which clue police are also following,” he added.

Councillors accuse the town clerk, speaker and the LC3 chairperson of allegedly forging minutes to sell public space without the consent of the council.
