More than 8,000 students will miss admission to Kyambogo University in the new academic year that opens next month due to shortage of space at the campus.
Prof Elly Katunguka, the Vice Chancellor, yesterday said 15, 910 students, who passed last year’s Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education examinations, had applied for their undergraduate courses at the university but this will not be possible due to shortage of facilities.
“15,910 students have applied and are interested in doing our courses. But we can take up to 7,000 because our infrastructure is not enough,” he told journalists in Kampala yesterday.
However, this number will increase in future following a $28.14 m (about Shs70.4 billion) loan the university secured from the African Development Bank for infrastructural development including staff training.
Prof Katunguka said although the university has been operating with a Shs6 billion revenue deficit, the administration will not increase fees for the incoming students.
The university’s annual budget is Shs72 billion but the government allocates it Shs21 billion as subsidy. The administration has to find alternative sources of money such as tuition and research fees to make up the deficit and fulfill their teaching and learning requirements.
However, Prof Katunguka warned that increasing tuition fees will be inevitable next year after the review of their academic programmes and merger of some untenable and duplicated courses.
“We have been trying to harmonise our curriculum. There are courses which have six students and we are paying a lecturer for a full day. We will see which courses are related and merge them. Tuition increment is something we will be thinking about in future,” he said.
