What you need to know:

  • Mr Ssewanyana and Mr Kyagulanyi were last week attacked by unknown assailants who hurled grenades at their homes.
  • Members of the Opposition accused government of being behind the attacks to scare the MPs and instill fear among citizens who are opposed to the planned lifting of the presidential age limit.

Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has promised to ensure that the security of legislators is beefed up following a recent spate of grenade attacks on Opposition MPs' homes.
Grenades were recently thrown at Rubaga North MP Moses Kasibante, Kyadondo East’s Robert Kyagulanyi and Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana’s homes.

The three are leading exponents against lifting the age limit provision in the Constitution.
Ms Kadaga struck a conciliatory tone when she visited the home Mityana Municipality MP, Francis Mutebi Zaake who was injured in the Parliament brawl and that of Mr Kasibante.

“I’m going to speak to the police to make sure there’s additional security. I will have a word with the Inspector General of Police to ensure that there’s more surveillance in the area so that they are not attacked,” she said.
Mr Zzake who is currently still nursing wounds claims that he was thumped by state minister for works, Gen Katumba Wamala until he became unconscious.

Mr Ssewanyana and Mr Kyagulanyi were last week attacked by unknown assailants who hurled grenades at their homes.
This came barely a week after two hand grenades were hurled and exploded at the home of Mr Kasibante in the wee hours of morning.
Members of the Opposition accused government of being behind the attacks to scare the MPs and instil fear among citizens who are opposed to the planned lifting of the presidential age limit.

However, government spokesperson, Mr Ofwono Opondo, described the incidents as tactics by Opposition politicians to frame the government.
“Flash grenades at opposition MPs’ homes could be own scare tactics to frame government. There is no record or history of this NRM government killing political opposition,” Mr Opondo said.
Police said they are to boost the MPs security.
