MP Akena promises to respect Ssegganyi’s legacy on dialogue, re-building UPC

Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party faction leader, also Lira municipality MP Mr Jimmy Akena has pledged to continue respecting their legacy of late secretary general Edward Ssegganyi on dialogue and re-building the party.

UPC secretary general dead

Ssegganyi who has been the UPC secretary general in the faction led by Mr Jimmy Akena, died on Monday at his home in Mityana District after battling cancer for some time

this week when he was rushed to Mulago hospital. The Akena faction’s chief administrative officer, Mr Higenyi Kemba said Ssegganyi succumbed to oesophagus cancer after getting organ failure two weeks back.
“He went for operation upon but later could not swallow. He died at Mulago where he had been rushed for medical attention,” said Mr Higenyi.

Addressing journalists at their weekly press conference in Kampala today (Wednesday), Mr Jimmy Akena said the deceased contributed to UPC during the most important time in the history of the party of rebuilding and pursuing dialogue immensely.
“He has led the party in Inter party organisation for dialogue and he was a voice of reason serving as one of the council members spear heading IPOD, electoral reforms and achieving democratic gains in Uganda,” Mr Akena said.
Mr Akena said: “The unrelenting spirit of comrade Segganyi in ensuring that the relentless fight against poverty, ignorance and disease is not lost. It continues to inspire us who are left behind in this struggle.”
“We appreciated his contribution and wise counsel to the party most especially at the time when the party is on its path for reconciliation," Mr Akena said.

Segganyi was born on June 13, 1958 to the late Segganyi Kiwutta and Mariam Namulinde of Mityana . He went to Namukozi Primary school Mityana from primary one to primary seven, after which he joined Namukozi Secondary School in Mityana for senior one to senior four and then Masaka secondary school from senior five and senior six.
He later joined Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo (ITEK) where he graduated as a Teacher. He taught at Mityana Progressive Secondary school, served as the Secretary Mubende District Administration from 1982 to 1985, Contested as a CA Delegate for Mityana South in 1993, served as the secretary Mityana District Farmers Association.

Ssegganyi was a member of UPC National Council. He was also appointed the Vice Chairman of the UPC Party Electoral Commission by former president Mr Olara Otunnu.
When the feud broke out within the party, Ssegganyi was appointed as secretary general of the Akena faction and served for two years upto his death
Burial arrangement
On Thursday, Ssegganyi’s body will be brought at the party headquarters at Uganda House for prayers at 10:00 am. On Friday the body will be taken to his residence in Mityana for vigil and last funeral service and burial will be in Mityana on Saturday.
