BUDAKA- Unknown thugs on Tuesday night raided Budaka District headquarters and stole 10 batteries valued at Shs10m from government vehicles.

The District Police Commander (DPC), Mr Wilson Salaam, said the yet-to-be identified criminals stole eight batteries from the four newly-acquired tipper trucks for the district and two other batteries from the truck belonging to the town council.

The DPC said they have launched a manhunt for the thugs.
“We are investigating the circumstances under which the vehicle batteries could be stolen from the park yard and yet there is security personnel guarding the place,” Mr Salaam said.

The vehicles were part of the consignment that the district received this year from the government meant to help in the road maintenance.

Mr Salaam explained that police officers are on the ground to establish whether the theft was an inside job.

“But we shall question the security personnel deployed to man the district headquarters for their laxity and negligence while on duty,” he said.

The Budaka Town Council chairperson, Mr Rogers Mukose, told Daily Monitor that the stolen batteries were for the only truck that has been helping the council to collect garbage.

The district chairperson, Mr Sam Mulomi, said this is not the first time that the district property is being stolen under mysterious circumstances. Early last year, unidentified people stole a district generator and broke into some of the offices.

“These recurring incidences must be a planned move within but I hope police will come to the bottom of the matter,” he said.
