Baboon shot dead after injuring 13-year-old boy

A 13-year-old boy from Lamwo District is fighting for his life at St. Joseph's Hospital in Kitgum following an attack by a stray baboon.
Daniel Oringa, a resident of Tumanun village in Agoromin Sub-County in Lamwo District sustained severe injuries in the chest from the baboon attack on Wednesday. The baboon is believed to have come from Odiya Forest ranges of Agoro hills. By the time of filing this story, Oringa was still awaiting surgical procedures at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Mr Denis Onyon, the LC 3 chairperson of Agoro Sub-County, said the baboon became hostile after being hit by an arrow by one of the residents in an attempt to scare it away.
"The baboon was attacked by the residents who fired an arrow at it, forcing it to throw back the arrows at the residents and in the process, one of the arrows hit the boy in the chest," he said.

He said as a result, police moved in and shot the baboon to death.
Mr Augustine Oryema, the Uganda Wildlife Authority ( UWA) Manager Kitgum regretted the incident, saying the residents should have called UWA officials to contain the situation.
“It is very unfortunate that a child was injured by the baboon but the community should have called us the professionals to contain the animal," he said.
He urged residents to report similar incidents to UWA so as to save the animal, human life and property.
