Barya returns nomination forms to EC

Kampala. Former Makerere University vice chancellor Venansious Baryamureeba has been the first candidate to return presidential nomination forms to Electoral Commission having collected the required number of signatures countrywide.
Prof Baryamureeba took the second step towards the completion of nomination after he returned supporters’ forms to the Electoral Commission offices on Jinja road yesterday morning after collecting 100 signatures from each of the required 77 districts. Shortly after returning the forms, Prof Baryamureeba took to his social media accounts to express his gratitude to his supporters and promised to deliver victory to them.
“I wish to thank all Ugandans for supporting my candidature and I assure you of victory come 2016, he said, adding: “I wish to inform the entire nation that today, [Monday], I have submitted [770] signatures from 77 districts and I intend to submit a supplementary list to make it 112 districts,” he stated.
Under the law, presidential aspirants are obliged to collect at least 100 signatures from two thirds of Uganda’s 112 districts. This means an aspirant has to raise at least 750 signatures from 75 districts. Prof Baryamureeba’s candidature now awaits verification and authentication of the signatures appended on the forms to be done by the EC.
Mr Jotham Taremwa, the EC spokesperson, said yesterday that “the forms will be subjected to a rigorous process of verification and authentication of the signatures. We have to confirm that those who signed on the forms are registered with us as voters.”
