BUGIRI - The JEEMA candidate in the Bugiri Municipality Member of Parliament seat, Asuman Basalirwa has appointed a total of 50 lawyers and MPs as polling agents ahead of the July 27 election.

Mr Basalirwa, who last Friday addressed a rally at Bugiri Bus Park, said the 50 appointees will fight bribery among local polling agents.
"These 50 will also help in the mobilization of voters against threats by security organs who are always deployed on Election Day in favour of the NRM candidate," he said.
Basalirwa who has been campaigning in some parts of his constituency with Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) also alleged that the NRM party plans to switch off
power, deploy heavily and bribe voters on the polling day.

However, efforts to have NRM party's spokesman, Rogers Mulindwa, respond to those allegations were futile by press time.

"I urge my voters not to be threatened by the army. Let us work together, eat their money and vote for Asuman Basalirwa," he said, pledging to attract foreign investors to the Municipality and lobby for the construction of schools, hospitals, and roads.

Meanwhile, Haji Siraji Lyavala Samanya, an independent candidate, at the weekend voiced his intention to support Basalirwa's parliamentary bid.
Lyavala told Daily Monitor in a telephone interview that: "I am a member of the NRM party but urge my supporters to vote for Basalirwa to ensure development in the area."

Hajji Lyavala, a former district LCV chairperson from1997 to 2011, was during the 2013 by-election, nicknamed 'Panadol' by President Museveni before later being appointed Presidential Advisor in-charge of Busoga affairs.

In May, he sought the NRM flag for the Bugiri Municipality MP seat but lost in the primaries to John Oketcho.
