Bats invade Apac health facilities
What you need to know:
Concern. This is the second time the bats are invading health units as officials promise to get rid of them.
Apac. Bats have invaded several health facilities in Apac District destroying some of the structures.
The authorities last week confirmed the bats have caused destruction in health facilities in Chegere, Ibuje, Inomo and Chawente sub-counties.
The district health officer, Dr Mathew Emer, said they would identify where the bats enter from, spray and block them.
According to Mr Emer, his office spent about Shs900,000 to spray Abei Health Centre II last year in an attempt to chase away the bats.
“After sometime, these bats came back and they are again causing problems there,” he told a meeting organised by the Apac Anti-Corruption Coalition last Thursday.
In the same meeting, the assistant chief administrative officer, Mr Francis Ateng, announced that government has allotted Shs500m to rebuild the dilapidated maternity ward at Apac Hospital.
“Every financial year, government allocates Shs500m towards the reconstruction of Apac Hospital. This year, they are rebuilding the maternity ward. I believe if we continue like that, three, four years down the road, the hospital will get back to its former status.”
Dr Emer said the district has improved the quality of services. “If you look at our service delivery indicators; OPD (out patient department) attendance, we are now attending towards 100 per cent of our population coming to get services from health facilities. If you are talking in terms of safe deliveries, we were at 28 per cent one time, now we are at about 34 per cent,” he said.
