Police on Tuesday arrested former Forum for Democratic Change Party President Dr Kiiza Besigye and his personal assistant, Mr Sam Mugumya in Kasangati, a Kampala suburb.
At about 8:30 am Dr Besigye and Mr Mugumya attempted to board a Kampala City-bound commuter taxi when they were arrested.
Eyewitnesses at Kasangati trading centre, near the home of former FDC party President, said a fracas ensued when the duo tried to resist arrest.
FDC sources told this reporter that the duo was heading to Buganda Road Court to attend court proceedings into the death of the late Ariong, a former police officer.
The FDC Youth leader Francis Mwijukye, who was travelling with the duo, survived arrest by running away from police.
Dr Besigye and Mr Mugumya are currently being held under preventive arrest at Kira Town Council police station.
Anticipating unrest, police have deployed heavily in and around Kira Town Council environs as news of the arrest of the two FDC politicians spreads.
Dr Besigye's legal team is yet to arrive at the police station.
At 9:30am, this morning, Mr Stephen Tanui, the Regional Police Commander Kampala North told this reporter, that Dr Besigye and Mr Mugumya were apprehended as they "attempted to disturb peace".
"We arrested the two as they tried to start their Walk-to-Work activities. We are holding them under Preventive Arrest until further notice," Mr Tanui said.
He said they cannot rule out the possibility of taking the duo to court," Mr Tanui said.
Dr Besigye, according to aides, does not have a driver, who is currently under detention following a riot at a public rally in Kawempe last week, that saw Dr Besigye's vehicle vandalised.
