One person was killed and five others injured in Bulamba Village in Nakaseke District on Monday night when a bomb they were tinkering with exploded.
The incident occurred near Kaweweta army training school.
The injured were taken to Nakaseke Hospital, where health workers successfully removed metal fragments from their bodies.
According to health workers, the patients are steadily recovering.
The deceased was identified as Edward Kizito while the injured persons are Mr Ssegawa Kalegete, Mr Ronald Kibubi, Mr Samuel Yiga, and another only identified as Ssemwogerere.
Speaking to journalists during a press briefing at the Central Police Station in Kampala yesterday, the central east region police spokesperson, Mr Lameck Kigozi, said: “Our Counter Terrorism Unit at Ngoma Police Station is still surveying the place so as to identify the nature of the explosive and whether there are other explosives in the area.”
A survivor, Mr Musa Kabuye, who escaped unhurt because he was several metres away from his colleagues, said: “One of our friends picked this bottle like object from the field where he had been slashing grass and all of us handled it suspecting that it could have been something abandoned by the soldiers since this area is near the army training school at Kaweweta.”
Mr Kabuye added that they made several attempts to open the bottle-shaped object. “We are surprised that this could be the object that detonated because we even stayed with it for more than two days before the incident. We had no knowledge that the object could be dangerous,” Mr Kabuye said.
