Gulu. Mr Richard Luganya Bongowat, a second year law student, has been declared winner of the hotly contested Gulu University guild presidential race.
Mr Bongowat becomes the 14th guild president of Gulu University since its inception in 2002. He replaces Mr Andrew Ogwetta Otto, also a law student.
Mr Bongowat contested with five other candidates; Mr Justine Ananga, a second year Bachelor of Public Administration student, Mr George Abudul, (second year Bachelor of Business Administration) and Mr Justine Aweto, a third year Law student. Others were Simon Lukyamuzi, a second year Computer Science student, and Mr Geoffrey Wanyama, a second year Bachelor in Quantitative Economics student.
Mr Bongowat scored 875 votes against his closest rival, Mr Wanyama, who garnered 816 votes in the election held at the weekend.
Mr Abudul got 479 votes, Mr Aweto had 100, and Mr Ananga scored 32, while Mr Lukyamuzi received 39 votes.
Announcing the results on Sunday night, Mr Denis Isaac Muloni, the returning officer Gulu University electoral commission, said the elections were largely free and fair but noted that there were cases of vote rigging.
“We found out that some students wanted to rig the votes, however, due to our good coordination, they were arrested and detained by the police at the university, pending investigations into the matter,” Mr Muloni said.
