HOIMA- The Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) results released yesterday show that boys continue to perform better than the girls especially in science subjects.

The Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) executive secretary Mathew Bukenya while releasing the results at the ministry of Education offices in Kampala announced that female candidates, as is the trend in the previous years performed better in humanities and the male candidates outpaced them in science subjects.

The results released yesterday at the Ministry of Education offices in Kampala also revealed that 64,132 (59.8 per cent) of the candidates who sat for the exams got two principal passes and thus qualify to join university.

“However, if other tertiary institutions are considered where one pass and two subsidiary passes levels are considered for admission,87,826 will qualify for admission compared to 88,975 (77.8 per cent) in 2013,” said Mr Bukenya.

A total of 36,666 (34.2 per cent) candidates got three principal passes in 2014 as compared to 32,829 (28.7 per cent) candidates in 2013. However, 1,741 (1.6 per cent) candidates failed the 2014 UACE exams as compared to 3,072 (2.7 per cent) in 2013.

Going by the released statistics, 20,547 boys excelled with three principal passes compared to 16,116 female candidates.

Also 15,742 boys excelled with two principal passes compared to 11,722 girls. While 14,541 male students passed with one principal pass compared to 9,152. More males however registered more failure rates (1,326) compared to 427 female students.

Mr Bukenya said 43,944 female candidates registered for the 2014 UACE exams compared to 46,651 in 2013.
Females constituted 40.6 per cent of the total number of candidates.

Mr Bukenya blamed the failure rates on teachers who are encouraging cram work.
