The Buganda Kingdom premier says statistics from the census will help the kingdom plan for its subjects.

Buganda Prime Minister Peter Mayiga has said the kingdom will benefit from the upcoming National Census set to start on August 28.

While urging the Baganda and all citizens to be part of exercise at Bulange, Mengo on Monday, Mr Mayiga said the exercise is not only useful in the planning and development of Buganda Kingdom but the country as a whole.

According to Mr Mayiga, the kingdom cannot wait to use the statistics to advance the development cause of its territory and her people. “We need to know who we are planning for in terms of age, gender, level of education and unemployment, among other things,” he said. He added: “With the census statistics, we will be able to know how we can ensure that at least every household is involved in commercial agriculture or food crops.”

Mr Mayiga also said the results of the population census should be used by the State to fix economic challenges because that is where the major problem lies and not in the numbers that will be accrued from the census per se.

“This exercise transcends cultural differences, political affiliations and tribal sentiments. So, we must all be involved in the exercise. And the results will be useful to all of us especially if we use it to economically empower our people,” Mr Mayiga said.

Earlier, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stanley Ntagali, and the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Mubajje, rallied support for the census, saying this is an exercise that the faithful should embrace.
