ISINGIRO- Nominations for the Bukanga County by-election, which were scheduled for today (Tuesday) and tomorrow have been postponed to November 11 and 12.
Mr Jotham Taremwa, the Electoral Commission spokesperson, said yesterday that the exercise had been pushed ahead because of delays by the government to release funds for facilitating the process.
“Funds to facilitate the by-election have been delayed. As we speak we have not yet received money for the exercise yet nominations were scheduled for today (November 5) and tomorrow. Funds will be ready by the end of this week. We have pushed the exercise ahead to get the money (from the Ministry of Finance),” Mr Taremwa said.
This, will equally have an effect on the campaign period that had been scheduled to run between November 8 and November 24. However voting will remain as scheduled on November 26.
The NRM party is still uncertain of its flag bearer following a petition by one of the candidates in the party primaries, Mr Steven Kangwagye alleging that the elections had been marred by irregularities.
Ms Jackline Asiimwe Matovu, the daughter of the former MP Gregory Matovu and former Mbarara District Speaker, Dominic Katusiime Kashaki are the other contenders who have shunned the NRM primaries to run as independent candidates. The FDC has Mr Baker Matsiko as its candidate while Democratic Party will front Mr Shafiq Dembe for the post.
