At least 25 people yesterday sustained injuries after a bus they were travelling in overturned at Nyakihanga, four kilometers on Ntungamo - Mbarara road.

The vehicle belonging to Jaguar Bus Company, was heading to Kigali from Kampala when it overturned after hitting a steep road side at around 7.30am.
Eyewitnesses said the driver was trying to avoid ramming into stationary road equipment ahead.

The victims were taken to clinics in Ntungamo Town but those with serious injuries were taken to Itojo and Mbarara referral hospitals.

The District Police Commander, Mr Francis Kabera, said the bus could have been speeding yet there was road construction equipment ahead.
“We suspect the bus was at a high speed and the road was not marked to indicate the works ahead. The driver suddenly saw equipment and tried to avoid it. But we shall establish the real cause,” Mr Kabera said.

Kabale-Mbarara road is currently undergoing reconstruction.

Road accidents tend to rise during the Christmas season, with bus accidents the more common ones.
Recently, at least 14 people were killed in Kalungu District when a speeding passenger bus veered off the road and overturned several times before bursting into flames.

Police statistics show that Uganda has one of the highest incidences of road accidents in the world.
