Bus catches fire, three die in Masaka crash

Wakiso- A bus travelling to Rwanda caught fire yesterday at Kitemu Trading Centre on Masaka highway. All the passengers survived but they lost their property to the fire.

Nsangi Police Station commander James Salaam said the bus belonging to Trinity Buses caught fire at 8am. “We are still investigating the cause of the fire,” said Ms Salaamu.

Meanwhile, three people perished in a road accident yesterday on Masaka-Mbarara highway.

The deceased have been identified as Robert Luwalira Kalumba, son of Masaka businessman William Kalumba, Paul Nkusi and an unidentified female student of Mutesa 1 Royal University Masaka campus.

The accident occurred at Kyakumpi in Masaka Town at about 2am when a Subaru car from Nyendo collided with a matooke-loaded Fuso truck coming from the opposite direction towards Kampala.

Eyewitnesses said the Subaru driver rammed into the truck as he was joining the main road from Nyendo in Masaka.

The Masaka District traffic officer, Mr James Tebaijuka, attributed the accident to reckless driving by the Subaru driver who died on spot.

He says the car was carrying four people and one of the women, who was not identified, survived and was taken to hospital.

Tebaijuka says the truck driver escaped after the accident but police were looking for him. The bodies were taken to Masaka hospital.
