Bus held for carrying smuggled baby milk

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) monitoring unit has impounded a passenger bus for allegedly carrying smuggled powdered milk worth millions of shillings.

The bus was carrying passengers from the Uganda-Tanzania border town of Mutukula to Kampala when it was intercepted in Kyotera Town on its way to Kampala.

The bus and its driver were taken to the URA post in Masaka District. Mr Charles Lumanyika, the URA regional spokesperson, told the Daily Monitor that the bus had a consignment of powdered milk hidden in its cargo carrier. “The milk was wrapped in 42 sacks, just like ordinary passenger’s luggage, but on verification, we seized 168 cartoons of SMA First Infant Milk that had no tax clearance documents,” Mr Lumanyika said.

The milk, which was packed in ratios of 450, 650 and 900 grams, also had no certification from the Uganda Bureau of Standards as well as manufacture or expiry dates. He said both bus and the milk owner would be charged with smuggling once the investigations are complete.
