Buses ordered to leave Qualicel park

KAMPALA.

The Transport Licensing Board (TBL), has given an order directing buses plying routes other than the eastern region to vacate Qualicel Bus Park today.

This follows last Friday court ruling dismissing city businessman Drake Lubega’s application for an injunction to stop the eviction that was supposed to start on December 1.

Qualicel Bus Park has been hosting buses plying all routes. But in the new regulations he contested, only buses plying to the eastern route are allowed to operate at Qaulicel Bus Park.

Buses operating on western route and inter-state will operate in Kisenyi Bus Park while those plying the northern region will use Namayuba Bus Terminal. TLB based its decision on decongesting the city.

In the orders issued last Friday by TLB secretary Winstone Katushabe, all passenger buses that don’t comply with the regulations will not be allowed to operate.

Mr Katushabe said Qaulicel Bus Terminal, on an 80 decimals plot, was designed to accommodate 52 buses a day but it has been accommodating 300, which has led many bus companies to operate on the nearby streets.

TLB officials say Kisenyi and Namayuba bus terminals are two acres and four acres respectively.
