Bwanika promises refresher courses for all drivers to stop road carnage

Presidential candidate Dr Abed Bwanika

Bushenyi : Presidential hopeful Dr Abed Bwanika has promised to introduce refresher courses for all drivers in Uganda if he is elected president on February 18.

While campaigning in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality on Thursday, Dr. Bwanika who claims to have once lived in Bushenyi told the residents that Uganda has high rate of road accidents because of untrained drivers.

He noted that many people have driving permits and can start every vehicle moving on road but do not know how to drive safely and responsibly. He said they would do better if they were provided with regular
training to equip them with the required knowledge and skills.

“In other countries pedestrians have the right of way as road users but here in Uganda, pedestrians and boda-boda cyclists are the most killed on roads by speeding cars. Road rules must be respected with maximum care. We must be responsible for our lives and other people’s lives.
We shall achieve that with free refresher courses for all drivers practicing in Uganda. May be they can learn and be more responsible while on road,” he said

Dr. Bwanika stressed that its dangerous for drivers to fail interpretation of road signs yet they have driving permits. He suggested that narrow roads will be widened to reduce
congestion which is also a cause of road accidents in the
country.

“I will introduce bigger buses which transport 26 passengers to have more people transported around Kampala. It will help taxi operators improve their income and foster development in the homes and areas,” said Dr. Bwanika
He also expressed his dream of having all big towns in the country redesigned and made clean as one of the strategies to make Uganda a better .
