Buhweju- Mzee Boniface Byanyima has hailed President Museveni and the NRM government for granting Buhweju a district status, saying the move had put back the area on the map after over a century in oblivion.
Mr Byanyima, a former teacher, MP and Democratic Party national chairperson, raised and mentored Mr Museveni during his youth days.
He later fell out with Mr Museveni after the latter became President following his intervention in a land matter.
“For the first time, I have thanked your government because you have brought Buhweju name back on the map. UPC government had removed Buhweju from the map,” Mr Byanyima said on Sunday in Buhweju.
He was speaking at St Mathew Archdeaconry where Anglicans were celebrating 100 years of Anglican faith in the area.
Buhweju was carved out of Bushenyi District in 2009.
ICT Minister John Nasasira, who represented the President, donated Shs20 million towards church development projects.
Mr Byanyima, however, asked the government to deploy those who are born in the district because they know the culture.
“Avoid prejudice. They under look Buhweju, they want to throw there everything bad. But Buhweju is not a garbage skip. It is an area that God created and put on top of all other places,” he said.
In a message read for him by Mr Nasasira, President Museveni asked people from Buhweju to return home and invest in their area.
He said the government would continue improving their household incomes.
Mr Nasasira said the district lost identity when it was raided.
