CIID chief arrested for stealing Shs7m exhibit

SIRONKO: Police in Elgon region have arrested ASP Denis Niyinkunda, the head of police intelligence in Sironko District on allegations of stealing Shs7m, which was supposed to be exhibited in a case..
The arrest follows a directive by Sironko RDC, Mr Moses Wamoto Kigayi to have the CIID arrested on sight over allegations of misusing Shs7 million, part of the money tendered to police as exhibit.

The stolen money, Mr Wamoto said, had been recovered from Youth Livelihood programme in the district.
The Niyinkunda reportedly recovered the said money from the chairperson of Bumukulo Youth produce and marketing, Mr Bosco Kasiko who received the Youth Livelihood funds but failed to distribute it to the supposed recipients.
After recovering the said money from the suspect, Niyinkunda is said to have declared only Shs1 million.
“The group chairperson didn’t follow the work plan of their group and used all the money for his personnel business. This prompted other group members to report the matter to my office,” said Mr Wamoto.

He directed Mr Wilfred Bagenda, the District Police Commander, to enforce the arrest and prosecution of the CIID officer.

“We have arrested him [Niyinkunda] on criminal offence of abuse of office. He must face the law,” said Chemusto.
He said the suspect has been transferred to Mbale Regional Police headquarters and his file sent to the Resident State Attorney for legal advice as investigations continue.
