The Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Directorate (CIID) has received Shs2.5 billion from the government through Cabinet approval, to facilitate investigations into alleged fraud in the Office of the Prime Minister and Ministry of Public Service.

The funds, which were requisitioned by the inter Agency Forum on Anti-Corruption in early December, were recently given to police.
According to the chairman of the Forum, Fr Simon Lokodo, who is also the Minister of state for Ethics and Integrity, the money was given to police after it was established that the investigations would require facilitation if they were to be conclusive.

Mr Timothy Lwanga, the chairman of the parliamentary Budget Committee, told the Daily Monitor that the money was never approved by Parliament but could have been part of the 3 per cent of the budget allowed by law to be spent by government without initial approval of Parliament.
“My Committee will handle the matter once government brings it to Parliament and as long as the money was used productively, there is no problem,” Mr Lwanga said.

The inter-Agency forum has members in different institutions including Uganda Revenue Authority, Director of Public Prosecution, Auditor General and Ministry of Finance.
