Arua. Mr Jackson Lee Atima, an Independent candidate in Arua Municipality by-election, yesterday broke down in an interview with NBS Television journalist Joseph Sabiiti, claiming massive rigging.
Mr Atima’s wife Rose is Maracha District Woman MP and his cousin Dennis Lee Oguzu is also an MP representing Maracha constituency. Below is the transcript.
Atima: “Why do they do this to me when I have done a lot for this government? Mzee (President Museveni) knows what I have done for him in this (West Nile) region. I am the second late (MP Ibrahim) Abiriga in this region (wails while shaking his head in disbelief).
I was rigged in the [ruling NRM party] primaries. I was rigged. I have come as an Independent (candidate) and I am wining and they are rigging me [out]. Nooooo...(voice fades as he wails, lift left hand to cover face streaming with tears and slouches head on the shoulder of another man).
(Between sobs) I want to win my election in a clean and fair way.
Journalist Sabiiti: What is your concern, sir?
Atima: My concern is that my own people are betraying me. My own government is betraying me. I have done a lot for Mzee. I have supported this government, I have done all sorts of promotions for this government; politically, security-wise, intelligence-wise.
They are aware. Hon Richard Todwong is aware, Afande (UPDF Resereve Force Commander, Maj Gen Charles) Otema is aware, the Director General [didn’t specify the spy agency] is aware, Mzee is aware. Jackson Atima is their own. They rigged my primary elections. Now I am struggling to work as an Independent and when I go through as an Independent, I will support Mzee (President Museveni), they know. My wife is...nooooo (breaks down again)”.
