AMURU- The Amuru District veterinary officer, Dr Batulumayo Okwonga, has said cattle distributed under the restocking programme are doing well.

Dr Okwonga said in an interview with Daily Monitor on Wednesday that the beneficiaries have done well in looking after the animals.

The government through Peace Recovery and Development Plan last year earmarked Shs20 billion for cattle restocking in Acholi sub- region.

Each district was allocated Shs500 million for the project while procurement of cattle is being done by the Office of the Prime Minister.

The targeted beneficiaries are mainly ex-combatants, orphans, former abductees, child-headed families, child mothers, widows and elderly persons.

According to Dr Okwonga, the district has so far received 571 improved cattle breed and they are expecting 538 this month.
“These are improved animals that need a lot of care, the beneficiaries have been able to care for them adequately,” he said.

The supplied cows have given birth to 400 calves. Pabbo and Atiak sub -counties have the highest number of the calves.

The LC3 chairperson Alero Sub county, Mr Geoffrey Onekalit, said there is need for continuous education of the beneficiaries on animal management.

Mr James Kilara, the LC 3 chairperson Amuru Sub -county, said the animals have reduced the redundancy of youth in homes where they were distributed.

He added that land is now being utilised for development unlike in the past.
