Makerere University Chancellor Mondo Kagonyera has called for disciplinary action against incompetent university officials.

Presiding over the graduation of 3,676 students from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences on the opening day of the 63rd graduation ceremony, Prof. Kagonyera said failure by staff to deliver adversely affected students.

“There have been reports in the media regarding failure to achieve certain tasks within the stipulated deadlines,” Prof. Kagonyera said.

“Let me, therefore, take this opportunity to ask the University Council and other organs not to shy away from taking disciplinary measures against staff that do not perform their duties.”

Thousands of students, particularly from the CHUSS, nearly missed this year’s graduation ceremony after their results were submitted to the University Academic Registrar after the November 9 deadline.

This forced the students to stage protests and petition the vice chancellor, Prof. Ddumba Ssentamu, who ordered verification to ensure that students who met all the requirements were added onto the graduation list.

No surprise
Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa, the deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), said this should not come as a surprise to anybody because if it is embedded in the institution’s human resource manual, then it should be taken on.

The Daily Monitor has learnt that no disciplinary action has been taken against the college registrars who submitted the student’s results late.
