Kampala.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Justice Mike Chibita, has warned students in higher institutions of learning to who think that being above the constitutional consent age of 18 means indulging in sexual immorality.

“Higher education has a very important role to play in the development of Uganda. However, it must be accompanied by values and certain rules. Higher education alone will not develop Uganda,” Justice Chibita said while officiating at the Uganda Christian University’s (UCU) Open Day at the main campus in Mukono on Friday.

Open Day at UCU is set apart for the public and students from secondary schools, especially those in Advanced Level, to visit the university.
The DPP’s remarks come after UCU recently suspended 26 students for getting pregnant yet they were not married, contrary to the university rules. The move received both public condemnation and praise.
In an interview with the Daily Monitor earlier this week, Gender minister Mary Karooro Okurut also questioned the fairness in UCU’s move to suspend pregnant girls.

“Universities have their policies but what about those boys that got them pregnant? Some of them are fellow students,” Ms Karooro wondered.
To date, the university maintains that it acted within the rules and regulation that each student subscribes to upon entry into the institution.
The DPP’s remarks were also applauded by Rev Can Dr John Senyonyi, the UCU Vice Chancellor, who said there is a need for quality education that addresses all aspects of life, adding that the university is paying attention to that challenge.

“Private universities work out their quality but public universities have their quality determined by law. As UCU, our main objective is to send out high quality graduates to meet all the needs of society,” Dr Senyonyi said.
