Chief Justice Katureebe attacked by iron bar-wielding man

KAMPALA- Bodyguards of Chief Justice Bart Katureebe have shot and injured a man, who attempted to attack him with an iron bar as he left his home, police said on Monday.

Justice Katureebe was heading to the Supreme Court to hear a petition by former independent presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi challenging the victory of President-elect Yoweri Museveni in the 2016 presidential election. Justice Katureebe is the lead judge in the petition.

The identity of the man is not yet known, but police say he has been known in the area as a man with mental health challenges.

Deputy Police spokesman, Ms Polly Namaye, said the man is currently in Mulago Hospital undergoing treatment under the watch of the security personnel.

“The incident happened at the gate of the home of the Chief Justice at Bugolobi, Nakawa Division, when the man who appears to be mad moved towards the CJ’s car while holding an iron bar.Security attempted to stop him but he just continued. A police officer shot him in the hand to disable him,” Ms Namaye said.

Police later recovered an iron bar, spears, arrows and a knife from the bag he was carrying.

Ms Namaye said the man will be interrogated when he has recovered.

Ms Namaye said they have also increased security around the home of the CJ since he is surrounded by many unfinished buildings.
