More than 200 delegates from Ibanda, Kakinga and Bigyera archdeaconries in Ibanda District have endorsed to break away from West Ankole Diocese, which is based in Mbarara District.
They want to form their own called Ibanda Diocese.
The delegates endorsed the proposal during a zonal consultative general meeting at St Paul Church in Ibanda Town Council on Wednesday.
Speaking at the meeting, the Ibanda Archdeacon, the Rev Can Yorokamu Atwine, urged the Christians to work harder and collectively to attain the long desired diocese.
“Kikagati Archdeaconry in Isingiro District is also working hard and competing with Ibanda District to get its own diocese,” the Rev Atwine said.
Mr Andrew Ahimbisibwe, an engineer and also the technical director of Sajac International Limited, said to qualify for a diocese status, the Ibanda archdeaconry must have at least a self-contained residential house for the bishop and his family. He explained that the bishop’s house, which under construction, needs more than Shs138 million to be completed.
