BUSHENYI: Retired Archbishop Mpalanyi Nkoyooyo’s fundraising drive has received a £18500 (about Shs 82million) boost from the government and more bequests from Ugandans living in the diaspora as family members appeal out for more help.
By Sunday, January 15, £23,513 (about Shs 105million) had been posted on his son, Isaac Nkoyooyo’s account, according to Mr Vincent Mukiibi, a Ugandan spearheading the fundraising drive in the UK.

This leaves a balance of £36,486 (Shs 162million) that must be secured within the shortest period of time in order to secure for him specialized treatment before the situation gets out of hand.
Daily Monitor last week published a story where Bishop Nkoyooyo’s relatives appealed to Ugandans living in the UK and the international charity organisations to contribute towards the cause.

Archbishop Nkoyooyo stuck in UK, seeks Shs265m for surgery

Bishop Nkoyooyo’ s son, Mr Isaac Nkoyooyo, a resident of West London, has contacted Ugandans living in the UK and also reached out to other international charity organisations to contribute towards the cause

On the GoFundMe international platform, the family posted as thus: “The family and friends of the retired Archbishop of Uganda, Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyooyo are trying to raise funds to cater for his medical expenses. The archbishop became ill around November and he is going to require emergency surgery in London. Without medical insurance, each and every expense is falling no the family. Please consider donating to help the family with medical expenses and travel expenses”.
But the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stanley Ntagali told journalists over the weekend that church and friends have committed to contribute towards medical bills of retired sixth Ugandan Archbishop, who is currently undergoing treatment in the United Kingdom.

He said the church cannot abandon Archbishop Nkoyooyo in UK as was reported in the media.
“Some people have written stories that the retired Archbishop is suffering in UK. It was a lie but we forgive those who tell such stories. We are in touch with the family and they are not stuck like it has been reported,” said Archbishop Ntagali.
He added: “Whenever someone falls sick, his friends come in to offer support. Our people have been flying to England and India for medical services.”

But close family members told Daily Monitor that the church had not yet made any commitment to the family.
“I consulted the family and they told me that the church is yet to make a commitment. We encourage people and well-wishers to contribute towards this cause because with such a complicated ailment, time is of essence,” stressed Mr Mukiibi.
The Archbishop however said the fundraising drive to meet Archbishop Nkoyooyo’s medical bills has started with the Diocese of Kampala raising over Shs20 million.
“My own diocese has already collected more than Shs20 million and other dioceses have started sending money on the account,” he told journalists.

He said he had spoken to Canterbury Church about Archbishop Nkoyooyo’s issue so that they can provide some support and that the government has also been briefed.
But Mr Mukiibi said: “The family wrote an application to Canterbury Church and they said the board has to sit first,”.
Archbishop Ntagali rallied the Church of Uganda to keep praying for Dr Nkoyooyo to recover soon and continue serving God and his people.

He is due for an operation in a private hospital in Kensington, Central London. Daily Monitor could not readily confirm his illness but family sources said he has complications with his lungs.
