Corruption is overshadowing government achievements- bishop

Kasana-Luweero Diocese bishop, Paul Ssemogerere has asked Ugandan leaders not to allow corruption outshine their hard-earned prize of liberating and restoring order in the country.
The cleric who described the level of corruption as a cancer in most government departments and the private sector, says the leadership of President Museveni should apply the experience of the battle field to end the vice.

“Our leaders have fought big military battles but the battle against corruption is a big challenge. Corruption is now a cancer in our society. When you get information that even courts where justice is supposed to prevail are sometimes compromised, the solution [to corruption] may not be with a single individual but a responsibility of every citizen” he said.

  Parents’ private money, and the sprawling private education apparatus have accumulated a large knowledge resource outside the public sector, and because they need to make a return on the investment, seems we have reached a point where, emotionally and for practical reasons, they have become mostly focused on finding yields outside the patronage and corruption-riddled public sector.

Bishop Ssemogerere was speaking to Christians at the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of St Paul Catholic Community Chapel at the Anglican founded Ndejje University main campus in Luweero on Sunday.
The bishop cautioned students against engaging in unnecessary strikes which defeats the purpose for which parents pay tuition.
“The parents have great hope in you as future leaders but are let down by your behaviour. You have many options to resolve your grievances without resorting to violence,” he added.
Ndejje University Vice Chancellor Prof Eriabu Lugujjo said the Catholic student’s community at the university wash cars and conduct community outreach programmes to raise funds used to sponsor the needy community in different projects.

“At Ndejje, we cherish their character and responsibility. When these students came up with this project [chapel], the university was obliged to support them,” he said.
According to Rev Fr Emmanuel Sita, the Rector of Nandere Minor Seminary and acting Chaplin Ndejje University, they will spend about Shs400 million to construct the chapel.
