Police in Butaleja District are holding a couple and nine others for reportedly attempting to marry off their 12-year-old daughter to a 45-year-old man.
The suspects were arrested on Saturday at their home in Bwirya Village, Nawanjofu Sub-county in Butaleja District as they were reportedly organising to hand over the minor to a 45-year-old man in exchange for bride wealth.
The man who intended to marry the minor was among those arrested.
Mr Vincent Otyeng, the officer in charge of the criminal investigation department at Butaleja Central Police Station, said they arrested the couple with several members of Bashirafu, a Muslim sect, after they were tipped off by a concerned resident.
He cautioned parents and guardians against marrying off their underage daughters.
“We are warning parents against the habit of marrying off their young daughters. We should guard against destroying the future of our children by marrying them off and we are going to arrest anybody whom we find doing this,” Mr Otyeng said.
