Court summons Weasel, Radio over video

Artiste Radio

KAMPALA- Court has summoned singers Moses Sekibogo, aka, Radio, and Douglas Mayanja, aka, Weasel, to answer charges of defamation.

Makindye Magistrate Richard Mafabi ordered Radio and Weseal to appear on July 12.

“You are hereby commanded to appear in the court on July 12 to answer to the said charges whose particulars are contained in the complaint. Should you fail to attend court as summoned, this court shall issue an arrest warrant against you for your production to this court,” reads the court summons.

The summons followed criminal proceedings initiated by music promoter Jeff Kiwanuka, who alleges that Radio and Weasel defamed him in a video posted on their Facebook pages on June 3.

Mr Kiwanuka’s lawyers Muwema and Company Advocates allege that on June 23, Radio and Weasel uploaded a Luganda video on their Facebook page attacking him with unpleasant remarks and that the footage has been viewed by millions of Facebook users and is still accessible.

“By the time you published the offensive video, you had full knowledge that Mr Kiwanuka was not associated with criminal acts of murder or beheading and had no evidence to support your claims. And yet in the video, you create the impression that our client is a ritual murderer who was either associated with or is the culprit in the Ogema case,” Mr Kiwanuka’s lawyers state in the complaint.

He further alleges that the publication of Goodlyfe video was made well knowing that the contents were false, with intent to injure his name, reputation and business.

Mr Kiwanuka had earlier asked Goodlyfe to immediately pull down the offending video from their Facebook page and publish an apology, on the same Facebook page, in addition to a text apology which he and his lawyers “ shall approve” in the mainstream print media with a payment of Shs5m as atonement for damages.

Background

Music promoter, Mr Kiwanuka was arrested after a suspected murderer, Mr Herbert Were, a student of Lumino High School in Busia District, named him as an accomplice in the murder of six-year-old boy, Joel Ogema.

It was alleged Were beheaded his young brother early this month at Lusasira Village in Busia and was later arrested from a friend’s place at Kajjansi in Wakiso near Kampala along Entebbe Road. He allegedly made the confession after arrest.
