Court upholds Kajubi’s life sentence

By Online Reporter

The Court of Appeal in Kampala has dismissed jailed city tycoon, Godfrey Kato Kajubi's appeal and upheld the life sentence handed to him by the High Court for ritual murder.

While delivering their judgment on Thursday morning, the panel of three judges, Remmy Kasule, Eldad Mwangusya and Justice Faith Mwonda ruled that they concur with the High Court ruling that conicted and sentenced Kajubi to life imprisonment.

In the ruling read by Justice Mwondha, the judges dismissed Kajubi’s appeal on grounds that the evidence adduced against the appellant (Kajubi) during his trial before the High Court was overwhelming and could not be faulted.

According to the three judges, Doctor Umar Katerega’s evidence was substantial enough to convict Kajubi and therefore, they found no reason to fault the sentence. Mr Katerega was Kajubi’s witchdoctor who turned into a State witness in a case that saw Kajubi jailed for life at Luzira Prison.

Court also dismissed Kajubi’s alibi that he was not in Masaka at the time of the ritual murder.

According to the judges, the print outs of Kajubi’s phone calls on the fateful day placed him(Kajubi) in Masaka, where the crime was committed, contrary to his (Kajubi’s) alibi.

Kajubi had appealed in court challenging the life sentence handed to him after he was found guilty of masterminding the ritual sacrifice of a 12 year old boy, Joseph Kasirye in 2008.

Mr Kajubi who is currently serving his sentence at Luzira Prison had appealed seeking acquittal by court, claiming the sentence was too harsh and unfair for him, compared to the circumstances of the case.
