Crocodile attacks, devours mother and baby in Kagadi

Shock and grief gripped residents of Rwebigongoro Landing site on Lake Albert shores in Ndaiga sub county, Kagadi district when a woman in her 40s was eaten by a crocodile with her 5 months old baby.

The Rwebigongoro Landing site Chairman Mr Swaibu Katusabe, identified the deceased as Ms Jesca Kabiira, a resident of Rwebigongoro in Ndaiga sub-county, Kagadi district.

Katusabe explained that Kabiira and her baby met their death in the teeth of the crocodile when they had gone to fetch water on the shores of Lake Albert on Friday at around 6pm.

According to her fellow women with whom the victim had gone, the deceased was captured by the crocodile when she was collecting water. 

One of the eyewitnesses told this reporter that they saw a crocodile approaching but they fled for their dear life leaving behind the mother who was carrying her baby.

‘‘Residents tried to save her but their efforts were fruitless as the crocodile had already disappeared with her body in the waters,’’ she said.

Mr. Jujuli Mugisa, the husband of the deceased said the body of his wife had not been recovered but residents and water experts have mounted a search for the remains.

He says the deceased was her first wife and is survived by 3 children aged between 2-10 years.
