DP backs Brig. Kasirye Ggwanga‘s approach on land grabbers

Kampala- The Opposition Democratic party has supported Brig. Kasirye Ggwanga‘s actions of setting ablaze a tractor that was being used to grade a piece of land in Lubowa, Wakiso District at the weekend.

Brig. Ggwanga says the land belongs to his daughter.

DP’s press secretary, Mr Fred Mwesiga told journalists in Kampala on Tuesday that “worse scenarios are yet to come” because the government has failed to resolve the land issue.

“There is no protection for land owners, those in power are taking people’s land freely and Brig. Kasirye was a victim who had to defend himself as an armed man to protect the land,” Mr Mwesigwa said.

On Sunday Brig Ggwanga bragged after burning a grader he found at his daughter’s land and vowed to “deal ruthlessly with land grabbers.”

Mr Mwesigwa said if a senior military man can take the law in his hands and burn a tractor; it means he had tried all possible ways of stopping the land grabbers.

“Contactors should be very vigilant in land issues because Ugandans are very mad when it comes to land matters. They are likely to lose several items including their lives,” Mr Mwesigwa said.

He said Brig. Ggwanga’s action is a lesson to the so called powerful army and government officials and their allies in the real estate business that when you push people against a wall, they have the capacity to fight back.

“They [land grabbers] have disturbed Brig. Kasirye several times on land issues and he has been a victim. If this happens to an armed man, what about poor Ugandans who cannot defend themselves,” Mr Mwesigwa asked.

Meanwhile at the same briefing, Mr Mwesigwa said party members would not to stop their campaign against the scrapping of a constitutional provision that bars people who are above 75 years of age from contesting for the post of president in Uganda.

Party members have on several occassion been stopped from campaigning against the scheme in several towns of Uganda.
