DP asks govt to up security for judicial officials

The Democratic Party (DP) has asked government to beef up security for judicial officers particularly those handling high profile cases.

Addressing journalists at their party headquarters in Kampala yesterday, Mr Kenneth Kakande, the party spokesperson, said the killing of the senior State prosecutor, Joan Kagezi, should be an eye opener to government about the laxity in security of senior judicial officers.

Kagezi was reportedly shot by two assailants who were trailing her on a boda boda in Kiwatule while driving back home.

She had been prosecuting a high profile case involving the July 2010 Kampala bomb suspects.
“Police should stop deploying at political rallies. It should instead protect judges because the death of Kagezi show that other people’s lives are at risk,” Mr Kakande said.
He added that although the police acted fast, they cannot bring back her to life.

“This is a wake-up call to do more on security than politics because the prosecutor was moving without any guard yet she was the lead prosecutor in the bomb suspects’ case,” Mr Kakande said.

However, the deputy police spokesperson, Ms Polly Namaye, said Kagezi was given security but she didn’t move with it at that time.
“As police, we had given security to her because she was among the very important people in the country. We give all important people security including ministers and Members of Parliament and those who don’t want they get their own,” Ms Namaye said.

She said the Force had already selected a team to investigate the murder and are ready to work with the public because they always have more information than police.

Kagezi’s death came shortly after the United States embassy in Uganda issued an emergency advisory to its nationals , saying a terrorist attack may take place soon in Kampala.
