DP leaders in Western Uganda disgusted by Nakiwala’s appointment to Cabinet

MBARARA- The Vice President of the Democratic Party for Western Imamu Makumbi has asked the State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs Ms Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi to cease associating with the Democratic Party since she has decided to join the ruling National Resistance Movement.
Mr Makumbi says it was wrong for Ms Kiyingi to accept to be a minister under the government he said was “not democratically elected”.
Speaking to journalists in Mbarara town on Sunday Mr Makumbi said DP leaders in the region wish to condemn her gesture of accepting the ministerial post without consulting party members.

“We the members of Democratic Party western region strongly condemn the actions of Owekitibwa Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi which are against the constitution of the party. According to the party constitution, one ceases to a member of DP once he or she crosses to another party which she has done by crossing to NRM,’’ Mr Makumbi said.
Other DP members who attended Mr Makumbi’s press briefing were Isingiro District DP youth chairperson Mr Piifu Matovu Mbarara District DP chairperson Mr Anthony Tubwebire DP Secretary Isingiro District Mr Faisal Mukwaya, DP representative for the Ankole Sub Region Mr Didas Lukyamuzi and Mitooma District DP youth leader Mr Nyanzi Muzafaru.

He said they want her to return the party card immediately since she has decided to have “individual understanding” with President Museveni.
“We cannot allow any member of DP to join President Museveni on behalf of the party because we have not had any negotiations his government as a party. So how can an individual negotiate with him on behalf of the party,’’ Mr Makumbi said.
Mr Makumbi noted that DP does not recognise Mr Museveni as a legitimate President since they do not agree that the February 18 election was fair given the arrest of the main contender, Dr Kizza Besigye immediately after the poll.

He said President Museveni is targeting DP youth and is the reason he appointed Ms Nakiwala as the youth and children affairs minister so that she can deliver them (DP youth) to NRM.
“We do not want Nakiwala Kiyingi to take our youth to NRM to impress Museveni. We urge all the youth to stop associating with Ms Nakiwala because she has ceased to be our member,’’ Mr Makumbi said.
He asked DP secretary general Mr Mathius Nsubuga to summon Bukomansimbi MP Deogratious Kiyingi for disciplinary for escorting her wife to State House Entebbe for her swearing- in.
