DP spokesperson held over defilement

GULU- Police in Gulu District are holding the deputy spokesman of the Opposition Democratic Party, Gulu branch for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old primary school girl.

Samuel Kinyera who was arrested on Monday, is the Gulu Municipal Council councillor for Layibi Techo Parish.
Police reports indicate the suspect was caught red handed allegedly defiling the girl in his house, located in Lacan Kwite in Layibi Division on Sunday evening.

The girl whose is a pupil of Koro Primary School in Omoro District.

The Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson, Mr Jimmy Patrick Okema told journalists in Gulu town, om Monday that the suspect is detained at Gulu Central Police Station.

He said that some of the girl’s family members said that the suspect lured the minor on Sunday evening before taking her to his house.

“The girl’s mother reported that when she returned home at about 9pm on Sunday, she didn’t find her daughter at home and on checking at her neighbour’s house, she wasn’t anywhere to be seen,” Mr Okema said. “When they moved towards Kinyera’s house, they saw her sandals at the entrance. After entering Kinyera’s house, she called out her name and the girl responded from the bedroom. The mother locked the door and sounded an alarm which attracted other people.”

Mr Okema said that when the neighbours forced the door open, they tried to arrest him but he overpowered them and headed to Gulu Central Police Station where he registered an assault case against the women who entered his house.
He returned to his house on Monday where he was arrested over alleged defilement.

Mr Okema said a medical examination that was carried out on the girl at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital confirmed that she had been defiled.

He said the girl’s testimony, so far, indicates that the suspect has defiled her five times since last month adding that on each occasion, the suspect gave her Shs10,000 while warning her not to disclose to anyone.

“Investigation has begun into the matter. We have preferred a defilement charge against the suspect and if the investigations are complete, we may even opt for an aggravated defilement charge,” Mr Okema said.
