DPP sanctions charges against Nambooze on incitement

KAMPALA. The Directorate of Public Prosecutions has sanctioned incitement to violence charges against Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze who is admitted to Kiruddu Hospital under police watch.

Ms Nambooze is being investigated on the offence of incitement to violence and offensive communication in relation to the killing of Arua Municipality legislator Ibrahim Abiriga.
It is alleged that after Parliament amended the law on presidential age limit, Ms Nambooze said MPs that fronted the Constitutional amendment Bill, 2017 and given security will be “touched” by aggrieved members of the public.

The spokesman of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Mr Vicent Ssekatte, confirmed the sanctioning of the charges of incitement to violence against Ms Nambooze.
The sanctioning of the file means that police must present Mukono Municipality MP to court and the officers may keep around her until her health improves.
Meanwhile, detectives led by the head of Homicide Department, Mr Johnson Mande, yesterday

demanding Ms Nambooze to hand over her desktop computer, mobile phones, laptops and tablets to help police in their investigation. The court order was issued by Chief Magistrate Jamson Karemani on Wednesday.

“It’s hereby ordered that; the respondent’s computers, mobile phones, and tablets be retrieved and used in investigations in this case. That they will not be held for more than 14 days subject to renewal of the time by the court,” the order by Chief Magistrate Karemani reads in part.

Mr Ssekatte said they have issued the order to Ms Nambooze and they are waiting for her to act as per the court instruction.
“We are here waiting to receive the equipment mentioned in the court order,” Mr Ssekatte said yesterday.
Ms Nambooze was arrested last Thursday and she has since been in the police hands.

When she developed health complications, Ms Nambooze was taken by the police to Kiruddu Hospital where she is still admitted.
Mr Erias Lukwago, Ms Nambooze’s lawyer, protested the orders, saying it was inhumane to bring court documents to a person in such a health situation.
“It is amazing how far they can go to persecute a person. It is no longer investigations. This is torture. You demand computers, phones and computers from a person who is sick,” Mr Lukwago, who is also Kampala City Lord Mayor, said at the hospital.
Mr Lukwago said Ms Nambooze is in a bad state and needs to be flown out of the country for treatment.
