DSTV suspends six children's TV programmes

MultiChoice Uganda has dropped six children's programmes that have been airing on three DSTV channels. The programmes include Loud House, the Legend of Kora, Hey Arnold, Steven Universe, Adventure Time and Clarence.

The six programmes have been airing Nickelodeon, Nicktoons and Cartoon Network. Ms Tina Wamala, the Public Relations Officer, MultiChoice Uganda, says they decided to drop the programmes following complaints by viewers about their content.

According to Ms Wamala, the suspension of the programmes also affects all the viewers across Africa.

The suspension comes after Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) banned the programmes from being broadcast in Kenya following complaints by subscribers last month, that they were not fit for young viewers.

In its statement, KFCB noted that the programmes were “obnoxious and inappropriate material that seeks to impair the moral judgment of children about the institution of the family."

Ms Wamala says that the suspension will last as long as Turner Broadcasting System that provides content to Cartoon Network and Viacom International Media Networks, which serve Nickelodeon and Nicktoons get a solution to the complaints.

“Viacom also wants to reinforce that it’s committed to diversity especially for the fact that Africans operate under different values and morals. Our culture as Africans has to be accepted and respected and the regulatory codes are in line with the market in which the channels broadcast,”Ms Wamala said.
