Democratic Party calls for tough gun laws

Democratic Party (DP) has urged government to put in place tough laws to regulate the use of firearms in the country especially by individuals.

According to police, Akena was shot after he reportedly knocked the car of businessman Mathew Kanyamunyu

Akena, a child right activist was shot in the stomach at about 8pmon Saturday and succumbed to bullet wounds later in hospital on Sunday morning.

Kenneth Watmon Akena, a CDO from Aruu North county Pader District is said to have been shot in the stomach at Game Stores for knocking another car and died at Novik Hospital moments after he was admitted

, the Chief Executive Officer of Quantum Express logistic and Ms. Cynthia Munwangari after the deceased gave a dying declaration to his brother, Mr. John Nyeko that he had been shot by the very person who brought him to hospital.

The deceased said that while reversing his car in the parking lot, he accidentally knocked Kanyamunyu’s car and he shot him as he tried to seek pardon for the mistake.

Addressing journalists at their weekly press conference in Kampala, DP Spokesperson, Mr. Kenneth kakande urged Uganda police and government to come up clearly and highlight who should possess a firearm as civilian and tough Laws on processes of licensing the same.

“It is a well-known fact but great disappointment to know that we have civilians who possess fire arms illegally and are using them in self-defense even in occasions where it is not called for,”Mr. Kakande said.

He said that they do not just wish to hear any parties in such scenarios sounding apologetic “we wish to have the law take its natural course”

“We also note the existence of impunity to the  extent that people feel some people are above the law, not long ago it was Desh Kananura,  it has now become  a trend, they  take them to court ,get them bail and the society will soon forget about it . This must be stopped now,” Mr Kakande said.
